Research-based reading comprehension in five key skills areas for grades 2-5

Consumable workbooks supported by a robust teacher's guide, lots of practice, and assessment tools.

Five comprehension skills - one skill per unit - are presented in each consumable worktext:

  • Making Inferences
  • Finding Main Idea
  • Comparing and Contrasting
  • Identifying Cause and Effect
  • Identifying Fact and Opinion

Each of five thematic units begins with four pages of skill instruction and is followed by 26 pages of application, practice, and assessment.

Reading Levels

Lvl B, Gr 2 -- Summer 2010

Lvl C, Gr 3 -- RL 2.0-3.5

Lvl D, Gr 4 -- RL 2.5-4.5

Lvl E, Gr 5 -- RL 3.0-5.5

The first selection of each book is written below grade level.

Each following selection progresses up to and ultimately into the target grade level.

Instruction
Each title features five Units - one unit each focusing on Making Inferences, Finding the Main Idea, Comparing and Contrasting, Identifying Cause and Effect, and Identifying Fact and Opinion.
Practice
Four pages of activites follow each reading selection. A variety of formats check student understanding of the unit skill and the comprehension of the lesson selection.
Application
In each Unit, the three 3-page reading selections are preceded by a "Before You Read" page. One selection is fiction, and two are nonfiction - developed on science and social studies themes.
Assessment
Assessment Reading Trends features regular assessment opportunities, including Pre-Tests and Post-Tests. All assessments feature standardized test formats.

80-Page Teacher Guides

Each title is supported by thorough guidance and teaching suggestions for every student activity, a complete answer key, and assessment for the program.

In addition to the Unit, Cumulative, and Final Reviews in the student book, the Teacher's Guide provides a Pre-test and Posttest as blackline masters. Standardized test formats provide students with valuable practice, strengthen test-taking skills, and assess student progress.
